ASP’s 50th Year of Service–
Staff Alumni Volunteer Week & Reunion Weekend

Alumni (& Family) Volunteer Week:  July 22-27, 2018
Alumni (& Family) Reunion Weekend:  July 27-29, 2018

Thank you for helping us celebrate ASP’s 50th year of service by registering for the ASP Staff Alumni Volunteer Week &/or Reunion Weekend!

Union College is graciously providing ASP with free on-campus housing for the week and weekend. These spaces are limited and will be a mixture of dorm rooms and classrooms. Families will be given priority in dorm spaces, with individuals likely assigned to classrooms (by gender). We will contact everyone in June with specific housing assignments.

If you would like to stay offsite, Best Western in Barbourville has offered a rate of $88/night for rooms (1 king or 2 doubles). You’ll need to make arrangements with the Best Western directly at (606) 546-8500 (speak with Tammy & mention ASP).

Please understand that staying offsite will not affect the cost of attending the Volunteer Week or Reunion Weekend.

Children are welcome for the reunion weekend as well, but we do not have specific events planned for them. Childcare will be available through First Baptist Church Barbourville. Are there hotels nearby if I want to stay offsite?

Where are the events happening?

Union College, 310 College Street, Barbourville KY 40906. Barbourville is about 1 hour 45 minutes north of Knoxville TN.

Do I need to bring my own vehicle?

Yes, please bring a vehicle if you can. If you are flying, ASP will offer a shuttle system to/from the airport based on need. ASP is investigating whether we might be able to provide passenger vans or cargo vans to those who are flying in.

Do I need to bring my own tools?

Yes, please bring your own tools if you can, but this is not required. Before your volunteer week the Center staff will reach out to you to discuss the worksite which you’ll be assigned to.

Do I have to have health insurance?

Every volunteer should be adequately covered by both accident and medical insurance. Many times a short-term medical/accident insurance policy can be taken out for the trip. United Methodist Volunteers-in-Mission or your church’s judicatory body may be able to tell you about the insurance coverage available to your group. APPALACHIA SERVICE PROJECT DOES NOT COVER ACCIDENT OR MEDICAL EMERGENCY EXPENSES THAT MAY RESULT FROM AN OCCURRENCE ON AN ASP TRIP.

Can you accommodate food allergies &/or dietary restrictions?

Yes, but we must know at least 3 weeks in advance of your trip about any food allergies &/or dietary restrictions.

How will work crews be decided?

Each volunteer will be asked to submit a Construction Information Form (CIF). The Center staff will place you with other Staff Alumni and their families on work crews. If you have any special requests (ex: you’d like to be placed with your old ASP staff, particular Alumni families, etc.) please let us know. We will do our best to accommodate requests.

Will there be Evening Gatherings?

Yes! The Staff Alumni Volunteer Week will be run just like any other summer volunteer week–just with alumni and their families as the volunteers.

Can we drink during the Volunteer Week? Reunion Weekend?

Possession or use of illegal drugs or alcohol is not permitted during the Staff Alumni Volunteer Week. Consistent with our regular summer program, any violators will be asked to return home immediately at their own expense.

During the Staff Alumni Reunion Weekend we request that you refrain from alcohol use. A large number of our current summer staff will be there–and still under covenant to abstain from all illegal drug and alcohol use.

Itinerary? What can I expect for the Reunion Weekend?

We are still developing an itinerary for the weekend. There will be ample time for informal socializing, as well as scheduled activities like a square dance, talent show, jam session and other staples of ASP. The weekend will conclude with a worship service on Sunday morning.

How many people are you expecting?

We’re really not sure, but all are welcome. Whether you served on summer staff, year-round staff, as a liaison, construction consultant, cook, dump truck driver, or in some other capacity — you are welcome!
